Journalists played an important role in how the public viewed the Little Rock Crisis. The local
Arkansas ( Gazette of Little Rock won two Pulitzer Prizes in 1957 for Public Service and Editorial
Writing. In awarding the prize, the Pulitzer Board noted, "The newspaper's fearless and completely
objective news coverage, plus its
reasoned and moderate policy, did much to restore calmness and
order to an overwrought community...
1. Write a
headline to
summarize in a fair and unbiased way why Eisenhower used an Executive
Order to desegregate Central High School. Use facts or statements from the sources to back up your
headline's point of view.
Bias
Headlines can sometimes show a newspaper's bias. Bias means to favor or preference one side over
another. For example, the Manchester Guardian (UK) subheading, ""Eisenhower redeems honour of
America," is favorable to President Eisenhower.
2. This time write another headline that is biased toward, or supportive of, President Eisenhower's
decision. Use facts or statements from the sources to back up your headline's point of view.
3. Now write a headline that is biased against, or critical of, President Eisenhower's decision. Use facts
or statements from the sources to back up your headline's point of view.
