The executive branch of the United States government has a number of agencies only loosely connected to the White House. While the White House might be in charge of appointments to these agencies, they are run free of the president's direct control and are allowed a certain degree of autonomy. This independence affords them certain advantages over other kinds of government agencies.

The primary function of the executive is to enforce laws and to maintain law and order in the state. Each government department is responsible for the implementation of the laws and policies concerning its work. For maintaining law and order in the state, the executive organises and maintains the police force.
