In the early 1930s, Richard LaPiere went on a road trip with a young Chinese couple. He expected to encounter many difficulties at restaurants and hotels given the negative attitudes towards Chinese people at that time. However, he did not encounter many problems. After the trip, he called the establishments and asked them their attitude about serving a Chinese visitor. Most of these places said they would NOT serve Chinese people.
