The brain keep memories which it feels related to it. For example. it's more easy to remember the names of interesting people but harder of ordinary people which you met in a party for example. That's because is the sense of importance acting in our brain.

In order to keep essential information, the brain has to realise that those informations are important. In order to do so, a daily recap by homework is important to remember the class material.

Some people has a different way of absorbing information. A schematic representation way can be helpful when the content is massive and overcomplicated. When the content relies on events, as a history class for example, movies and theater are excellent tools to provide a vivid and sensitive approach with the historical events.
