Rice is one of Louisiana’s top agricultural crops, valued at $535 million in 2010. In addition to Louisiana, states such as Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and Missouri are also major producers of rice. Rice grown in these states is consumed within the United States, as well as exported to other countries. In 2006, eleven thousand rice farmers in these states unknowingly planted a genetically engineered strain of rice that made the crop unfit to export to most countries. These genetically engineered seeds were still in the process of undergoing artificial selection experiments to make them weed-resistant when they were accidentally mixed with other seed supplies. Many farmers lost a lot of money due to this faulty seed. Based on this information, what conclusion can be drawn regarding genetic engineering’s impact on society?
