How does energy transfer by waves differ from energy transfer by a moving object?

In a moving object, the energy is transferred through the motion of the matter contained in the object. This can be seen also by the formula of the kinetic energy of an object:

where m is the mass and v the speed of the object. As we see, the energy transferred is related to the mass of the object, m: so we can say that in the case of a moving object, energy is transferred by moving matter.

In the case of waves, on the contrary, there is no transfer of matter, but only a transfer of energy. Waves are, in fact, transfer of energy through the oscillation of matter*, but this matter is not transferred along the direction of propagation of the wave, it just oscillates around a point. So, the main difference here is that energy is transferred by waves without the transfer of matter.

*The only exception are electromagnetic waves, which consists of oscillation of electromagnetic fields, not matter.
