A person with weight W1 stands a distance of 0.25 L away from a wall on a horizontal beam that is “L” meters long and held up by friction along the wall. The beam’s weight is Wb. There is a cable attached to the free-end of the beam, and makes an angle of 45 degrees to the horizontal and is attached to the wall. The coefficient of static friction is “mu”, and the person weighs 4 times the plank’s weight.

Draw a free body diagram of the beam first with actual forces, and then draw another free body diagram with all force components in both directions.
Determine an expression for the tension in the cable in terms of ONLY the weight of the plank if the person is at the maximum position that static friction will hold him up.
Solve for “mu” static. Give a numerical value.
Determine the reaction force (both components or the actual force with the angle) ALSO in terms of Wb that the wall exerts on the beam.
If the person walks farther away from the wall, and if “mu” static stays the same, what would happen? (Easier for beam to stay horizontal, or will the beam slip off the wall, and explain your reasoning.)
How would the tension in the cable change and how will the force of friction change along the wall? Explain your answer.
