An instrument is recorded; the resulting pressure vs. time graph is shown below. You may take 340 m s for the speed of sound in air. If this instrument was a flute (open on both ends), determine the length of the air column that produced this tone. Note: The length of the air column may not be the same as the length of the flute – it depends on the number of keys pressed down! Start with a standing wave diagram and solve from there; no memorized equations, for full credit!
If this instrument was an organ pipe (closed on the left end), determine its minimum possible length. (Start with a diagram again.)

Draw the two standing wave diagrams from the flute and organ pipe, this time one above the other, scaled properly relative to each other. The actual value of the scale isn’t important, but they should be the correct dimensions relative to each other.

What’s happening to the particles at the left ends of each? What’s happening to the air pressure at the left ends of each? Explain why this is the case, in terms of interference and reflection.

Air is to be preheated by hot exhaust gases in a cross-flow heat exchanger before it enters the furnace. air enters the heat exchanger at 95 kpa and 20°c at a rate of 0.6 m^3/s. the combustion gases (cp = 1.10 kj/kg°c) enter at 160°c at a rate of 0.95 kg/s and leave at 95°c. determine the rate of heat transfer to the air and its outlet temperature.
