Arectangular yard has area 96 square feet. if the width of the yard is four feet less than the length, what is the perimeter, in feet, of the yard?

Assume the length of the yard = x
Assume the wigth of the yard = x - 4

The area of the rectangular yard = width x length
That means,
96 = x * (x -4)
96 = x2 -4x
x2 - 4x -96 = 0
( x -12) (x+8) =0
so x = 12 and -8, we will neglect the value of -8 because there is no length is negative

The length of the yard = 12 ft, Width = 8 ft
The perimeter = (width + length) x 2
the perimeter = 40 ft
