Take it piece by piece: 
5 times a number, rewrite as 5x 
plus -2, nothing to rewrite there, that's already simplified, 

added to nine times a number, rewrite as 9x. 
Now, rewrite as an equation: 
5x-2+9x = (See, it already looks better!) 
Now combine like terms: 
5x + 9x -2= 14x - 2
