1. 1948: HUAC investigated Alger Hiss, a high-ranking State Department official before he left

a) Whittaker Chambers, editor of Time
magazine, accused Hiss of being a Communist in the
1930's

b) Hiss denied the charge and sued Chambers for
slander
C)Chambers then accused Hiss of being a Soviet
spy
d) Spy charges fell through, but Hiss was
convicted of perjury on the stand and he went to
prison for 4 years
