How did the Crusades increase European interest in trade with Asia?

In addition to combat during the Crusades, when new goods and innovations were traded, commerce was an important aspect. They came into contact with civilizations which were more advanced in several respects than their own. In addition to medical concepts which had long been ignored, the Arabs taught Europeans about advanced arithmetic and the numeral system.

Crusaders had to procure their own food and were exposed to new goods that they would take back to Europe with them. Sherbet, cocoa, chocolate, fruit, and rice were included in these meals. The arrival of fresh food goods helped improve trade with the East.

Muslim traders have purchased daily household objects, including mirrors, textiles, carpets, and sailing compasses. It became apparent that the East was more mature strategically. When these commodities were taken West, demand for trading was increased. In nature, many of the items were considered to be exotic and the rich felt obligated to acquire them. The increased demand for these products has permanently sent traders to the east to set up trading networks.
