1. What caused the Christmas Day Tsunami? The cause of the Christmas Day Tsunami in 2004 was an earthquake with an epicenter of a 9.0 magnitude. The earthquake that happened in the Indian Ocean near the west coast of Sumatra was thought to have had the destructive force of 23,000 atomic bombs.
2. What kinds of geographic forces were involved in creating the tsunami? The tectonic plates in this area and the ocean are the geographical forces that were involved in creating the tsunami. The tectonic plates had been pressing up against each other for an extended amount of time, building up lots of pressure and force. The movement of these plates was more than 600 miles long and the relocation of the seafloor several yards vertically and ten yards horizontally displaced a humongous amount of water, causing violent shock waves to form and go off in every direction.This resulted in tons of rock and water moving, and then became thee largest magnitude earthquake in 40 years.
3. Why were so many people caught unprepared? The tsunami affected over eleven countries, including Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, the Maldives, Somalia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Seychelles, and even other countries' citizens who were also killed by the tsunami. The tsunami left over 150,000 people either dead or missing, and millions without a place to live. How were this many people unprepared though? There were several hours between the earthquake and when the tsunami actually struck, yet it was one of the most destructive natural disasters in the world. The reason they were caught unprepared was because there were simply no tsunami warning systems in the Indian Ocean, so there was nothing to detect the tsunami and warn civilians. Also, because of the relative poorness in this part of the world did not help, especially since tsunamis aren't relatively easy to detect in deep waters, so they were gravely unprepared.
