How did the experiences of slaves in the chesapeake differ from south carolina

Slavery was in some northern colonies until the late 1700's and early 1800's (ie NY, PA, etc) and even then it did not really end. Slavery wasn't as profitable in the North because of the colder climate and farming was usually small scale. Puritans in New England owned slaves early on (not sure why they were such staunch abolitionists later), but it wasn't really economical to have slaves in such a cold climate or to use for house servants.

The Chesapeake has had an interesting slave experience. As you know, the Chesapeake was settled in the early 1600's and at first, the settlers tried to enslave the Native Americans. However, that did not quite work out. Next, indentured servants were used, but again that was not as profitable as slaves. Therefore, the landed gentry of the Chesapeake used slave labor on their large plantations. Tobacco was a big crop in the Chesapeake region.
