What events lead to the establishment of St. Augustine and Ft. Caroline in North America?

I think it was because evry European country was trying to expand.

Spain colonies came to St.Augustine, which is why it is a spanish city and was the first city in the USA. European settlers came to Ft.Caroline for the same purpose basically.
