We cannot fail to recognize that the European arrival on the American shores produced a remarkable advance of humanity, but progress cannot hide the magnitude of the tragedy consummated.

Explanation:

The arrival of Europeans on American shores had a formidable significance.

- We had knowledge of the planetary dimension,  

- New navigation routes were opened that boosted trade and contact with human diversity,

- Science and technology were enhanced, and  

- The foundations were laid for capitalism and the Industrial Revolution, but ...  

The negative side of this venture cannot be denied. A century after the arrival of Europeans to America:  

- There were only 3 million left of the more than 70 million Native Americans, mainly because they had no protection against the viruses and bacteria that Europeans brought,  

- When they decided to defend themselves, they were defeated by the lack of war resources, surprise, and confusion,  

- They were deprived of their culture and beliefs,  

- The almost extinction of the native population produced another genocide because to replace indigenous labor, people were hunted for centuries in Africa to bring them as slaves to America.

- Even today in many countries of the continent the Native American population suffers from social, cultural and economic discrimination
