British Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke about the military operations to evacuate British and allied forces  in a speech delivered to Parliament on June 4, 1940. The French army could not withstand the onslaught of German armored units. Eight to nine divisions, some 400 armored vehicles, attacked the French in the north from the right and the rear. These were his words:  "The German eruption swept like a sharp scythe around the right and rear of the Armies of the north." The Germans managed to severe communication lines between the French main armies and the British, cutting supplies. And this is the main reason Churchill provides for why the Battle of France was lost.
