With Thomas Jefferson and James Madison as leaders, the party opposed to the Federalist interpretation of the Constitution and they intended to limit the federal government's power by giving more power to the states and local governments. As for the foreign affairs, they preferred to lean towards France and not Britain.

Also, the anti-federalists, which were later, called the Democratic-Republican Party, had a different view. They advocated for the rights of the states. They were not in support of national banks but supported farming instead of manufacturing that the federalists advocated for.
