Knowing about medical terminology helps you understand and converse comfortably about anatomy and physiology. Normally, there are relatively few root terms, prefixes and suffixes which are put together to form numerous terms. Every medical term has a basic structure upon which the term is built. This is called the word root. Example - "cardi" is the word root for terms concerning the heart. Now by adding certain prefixes or suffixes, the terms change and their meanings too. By adding the suffix "logy" which means "study of" the term "cardiology" is created. This means the study of the heart.
