The space station is not only really heavy and massive, but also very spread out. It was built in various pieces by various countries as a collaborative effort. The United States, Russia, European Space Agency (ESA), and Japan all contributed modules that were assembled to form the international space station. Each module was constructed on earth, and then launched into space for the assembly/docking to occur. So in a sense, it's like each lego piece was made on earth only for the pieces to be clicked together in space. Overall, all the pieces put together could not all be launched off of a single rocket due to its massive size and weight.
