While in school, you need to build a portfolio of sketches of your own designs. You do not have to be a master artist, just be able to draw enough to show would-be clients what you can do and where your ideas are going. One way around being a good artist is to clothe a mannequin with your designs and take pictures. Another use of your portfolio is to show it to potential fashion houses for possible internships.
