Proles are the working classes of the fictional nation of Oceania. If closely observed, Oceania’s proles closely resemble the ‘proletariat’ or the common people, who formed the basis of the Communist society. The proles are further organized into their indigenous social hierarchy. The Inner Party and Outer Party members consist of the upper echelons of Oceanic society, with the members of the Inner party emerging as the wealthiest of all them all. The proles are not subject to constant government surveillance, leaving them with a considerable share of freedom to choose and practice their occupation. The members of the Inner and Outer Party are subject to constant government scrutiny, and they also found their lives controlled. This structure is very similar to the Socialist regime of Communist Russia, who constantly kept the members of the party under surveillance. The proles do not receive formal education and only care about daily survival. They are exempt from displays of patriotic fervor or totally idolizing the Party leader, however, they are required to express a mild acknowledgment of their subjugation by the Party. The settling of proles to this situation, might not be favorable for a rebellion, as they have not yet learned to see beyond the present, into the great future.
