You would want to write a thesis statement to sum up your essay or report in a simple sentence. It also provides an outline to the reader. It could also answer a question and is the main statement that your essay revolves around. 

Three characteristics of a strong thesis statement are: 
1) It is a complete sentence and not a question.
2) It makes a point or argues a position. 
3) It is specific and to the point.

When the author asks himself a series of questions, it conveys the way he thinks and where he stands.at least that's what i believe.
