'Quality of Life' is the degree to which an individual is healthy, comfortable, and able to participate in or enjoy life events. The term 'Quality of Life' is inherently ambiguous, as it may refer both to the experience an individual has of his or her own life and to the living conditions in which individuals find themselves. Hence, 'Quality of Life' is highly subjective. Some think that quality of life is measured according to wealth or satisfaction with life. Other people define it in terms of capabilities. Within the arena of health care, quality of life is viewed as multidimensional, encompassing emotional, physical, material, and social well-being.
The World Health Organization defines 'Quality of Life' as “individuals’ perceptions of their position in life in the context of the culture and value system in which they live, and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns.” 'Quality of Life' seems to embody overall well-being and happiness, including access to school, work opportunities, absence of military conflict or threats, as well as good physical and emotional health.
Standard indicators of the quality of life include wealth, employment, the environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, safety, security, and freedom. But the challenge in measuring quality of life lies in its uniqueness to individuals. Many of the existing measures of quality of life fail to take account of this by imposing standardized models of quality of life and preselected domains; Perhaps they are then measures of general health status rather than quality of life. As I see it, one's quality of life depends on his/her well-being in physical, psychological, and spiritual terms. Therefore, health, wealth, family, friends, and social life all have a role in the overall Quality of Life. But I believe that the ultimate goal of a human being is to reach happiness.
