In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. sought to increase the support of the movement for civil rights. In May, he helped organize demonstrations for the end of segregation Birmingham, Alabama. The protesters found the perfect enemy in Birmingham's police commissioner, Eugene “Bull" Connor, whose beefy features and snarling demeanor made him a living symbol of everything evil. Connor's police used clubs, dogs, and fire hoses to chase and arrest the demonstrators. President John F. Kennedy watched the police dogs in action on television with the the country and confessed that the brutality made him sick. He later observed that "the civil rights movement should thank God for Bull Connor. He's helped it as much as Abraham Lincoln." As a result of the demonstrations, the president sent the head of the Justice Department's civil rights division to Birmingham to try to work out an arrangement that would permit desegregation of lunch counters, drinking fountains, and bathrooms. The president also made several calls to business leaders himself, and they finally agreed to his terms. (Schaller et al., Present Tense, p. 235.) Q: State the implied main idea of this paragraph?
