The case New York Times Co. v. United States (1971) was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States. The case arose because President Richard Nixon had tried to force the newspaper to stop the publication of what is known as the Pentagon Papers, a series of then-classified documents. However, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment protected the right of the newspaper to publish the materials.
