The amount of bread in each story affects the bread's value or importance because the bread depending on each story it gets more valuable or less valuable depending the setting. For example in the first setting the bread has no value as it has no weight to it. It's just a normal piece of bread, no value no importance, everyone has at least a piece of bread in their house. But once you get into the second and third story, bread seems to value a lot to the characters in it.

In the second story its life or death, who will eat the bread and continue living. In the third story is refers to the persons old life, a life out of jail. The bread represents to him his freedom that he selfishly took for granted.

Depending on the situation a piece of bread is the most precious thing to your name or its just another cheap useless item.

especially in the 2 sister story, one sister needs the bread to feed her dying children and she can't work either as she is a widow and in that era women couldn't work. But on the other hand the other sister was married to a wealthy man and she could have anything she desired, but instead of helping family she was selfish. She told her starving sister that if she gave a loaf of bread to her and her children then she wouldn't have anymore bread for herself.
