My first thought is that the author was going through a break up. expressing their hurt an dpain even when they thought they weren't going to be as hurt as they are. but this can be used as alot of other things. like losing your dad and not to death but by him deciding to leave you and your mother at a young age. hurt and true pain is how i would imagine the author is feeling.
