What do you learn about maya and the conflicts she faces in lines 1-14?

From the first fourteen lines of the story, I learn that

Maya faces self conflict when she was handed the permission slip for Spring-Fling, an all-dance group. She loved the idea of dancing and being in that school, but when she handed her parents the permission slip to sign for her, their answer was always a No.

Their culture as Kazakhs influenced her parents decision. So, in these first few paragraphs, Maya battles within herself for accepting the permission slip when she knew that she had always gotten a no.
