(2)the battle took place in chile when a chilean leader named o'higgins was fighting to win his country's independence from spain. (3)the chilean patriots were surrounded by a larger, well-armed spanish army. (4)wounded and seemingly without any options, o'higgins came up with an idea. (5)he ordered his soldiers to gather together as many cows, mules, sheep, and dogs as possible. (6)then, using gunshots to frighten the herd, o'higgins got the animals to stampede toward the spanish camp. (7)in a short time, the spanish forces were being attacked by a frightened crowd of charging beasts. (8)while the spanish were busy trying to protect themselves from the animals, o'higgins and his men escaped into nearby mountains. (9)three years later, o'higgins and an army of four thousand men returned from the mountains and defeated the spanish once and for all.
