Grendel is depicted as "bent on destruction and bulging with rage" which already begins to depict Grendel as a monster. The preconceived notion that only villains and monsters destroy objects leads any reader to automatically assume Grendel is a monster, no matter if they have read the entirety of the story or not. Beowulf, however, is praised throughout the battle scene. The author notes Beowulf's wisdom and bravery constantly. These are traits that are always associated with the hero of the story. An author will hardly ever showcase a hero's flaws in a negative light, and Beowulf is no exception. He is put against a character with "claws of the heathen suited for slashing in horrible slaughter". With these stakes put against him, there's no way he cannot be seen as a hero going against such a creature.
