Wireless security algorithms have evolved through undergoing several changes and being constantly upgraded from the early 90's in order to ensure more security as well as effective. Over the decades, several wireless protocols developed that serves the same purpose but being better over the time period. Here are three protocol generations that have been developed for ensuring security to the Wireless networks:

1. WEP:

WEP is actually developed in 1999 for the wireless networks and being approved as the Wi-Fi security standard.

WEP was having several security related issues and it is quite easy to break and at the same time very hard to configure.

WEP remain still vulnerable to security threats and hence abandoned by the Wi-Fi Alliance.

2. WPA

This is a IEEE 802.11i wireless security standard and it is considered as the security enhancement of the WEP.

WPA make use of the pre-shared key and the temporal Key Integrity Protocol for encryption. WPA uses the authentication server for the keys as well as for certificate generation.

WPA just like the WEP have been tested through several proof and concept and found out that it was also vulnerable to security issues.

3. WPA -2

This is the 3rd generation wireless security standard as the 802.11i protocol is being used in this version also. Since WPA2 uses the advanced encryption standard and AES is the most powerful encryption standard used in today's market.

WPA-2 reduces the possibility of the attacks over the Wi-Fi is quite effective and with constant upgrade to the firmware makes the entire security more powerful as compared to the other standards.
