There are two parts to this experiment. In part one of this experiment, you will observe and compare the viscosity of four liquids: olive oil ketchup honey and motor oil. In part two of this experiment you will determine how temperature effects the viscosity of a liquid. You will drop a marble into the cylinder with the ketchup and time how long it takes the marble to sink from the top line to the bottom line. You will do this 3 times. Start the timer when the marble is dropped into the cylinder and reaches the top line. Stop the timer when the marble reaches the bottom line. Find the average time it took for the marble to sink in ketchup. Now you will do the same thing with the cylinder of olive oil. Drop the marble into the cylinder with the olive oil, and time how long it takes for the marble to sink from the top line, to the bottom line. Do this 3 times. Be sure to record each of the times and calculate the average. Next, you will fill the cylinder with honey. Drop the marble into the cylinder with the honey and time how long it takes the marble to sink from the top line to the bottom line. Do the same thing 3 times with the cylinder of honey. Record each of the times and calculate the average. Finally, fill the cylinder with motor oil repeat the experiment with the cylinder of motor oil. Record how long it takes the marble to sink from the top line to the bottom line. Preform the same experiment 3 times with the cylinder of motor oil. Record each of the times and calculate the average. In part two of this experiment, you will determine how temperature effects the viscosity of a liquid. Record the temperature of the honey in the graduated cylinder. Just as you did in part one, use the timer to measure how long it takes the honey to sink from the top line to the bottom line. Record your results. You have heated the honey for 15 seconds in the microwave, measure and record the temperature. Drop the marble into the heated honey and record the time as you did before. Here, you have heated the honey for 15 more seconds in the microwave, measure and record the temperature. Drop the marble into the heated honey and record the time as you did before. For the last trial, you have heated the honey for 15 more seconds in the microwave, measure and record the temperature. Drop the marble into the heated honey and record the time as you did before.

Write a summary paragraph for each part discussing this experiment and the results. Use the following questions and topics to help guide the content of your paragraph.

Part 1

What was your hypothesis? According to your data, do you think your hypothesis was correct? (Be sure to refer to your data when answering this question.)
Summarize any difficulties or problems you had in performing the experiment that might have affected the results. Describe how you might change the procedure to avoid these problems.
Be sure to submit your data along with your paragraph.
Part 2

What effect did the temperature have on the viscosity of the honey? (Be sure to refer to your data when answering this question.)
Give at least two practical examples where knowledge of viscosity is important.
