It is due to structural problems often resulting from injury or trauma.  Overflow incontinence is not caused by a weakened pelvic floor. It is caused by too much urine being stored in the bladder.  Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercise therapy for women with stress incontinence strengthens the muscles of the pelvic floor, thereby helping decrease the occurrence of incontinence.  Urge incontinence is not caused by a weakened pelvic floor. It is caused by a problem (i.e., neurologic) with the client's urge to urinate.
