No, I don't think this type of engineering should be pursued. There are a lot of positive impacts that could root from this science but the negatives are too profound and outnumber the benefits. Although this could help cure dangerous and common diseases and disorders, there are too many risks. This power can and will be abused by people.

Some of the pros do include some powerful, great outcomes such as gene therapy, which is an experimental technique that uses genes to prevent and treat diseases. Curing gene disorders and creating a healthier, stronger and smarter future generation. The process of hybridization could have a positive affect on an animal's ordinary nature, increasing their performance and physical appearance. 

There are possible drawbacks. Even though we would be allowing leaner, better meats and milk, we would be pumping animals with extra hormones causing the producer and consumer to intake extra genes. This is nowhere near healthy and could cause disease or even fatality. Theres also the possibility of going against natural election and limiting gene diversity. Or an accidental creation of a new, deadly genetic disease entering gene pool.

And, in my opinion, this type of technology - if we are going to be real here- wouldn't just end with animals. We would would move onto humans and the negatives outweigh the positives. This could create an elite human class causing a major separation between the higher and lower classes. And, currently, this science has a low success rate among complex multicellular organisms. And not to mention the possibility of massive extinction.
