The menstrual cycle is divided into 4 phases: the follicular phase, the luteal phase, menstrual phase and finally the ovulation phase. This cycle lasts for 25-40 days depending on the individual and it is during the luteal phase that the graafian follicle releases an ovum then it develops into a yellow mass called the corpus luteum.

The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle starts with the production of the hormone Luteinizing hormone that stimulates the maturation of the ovarian follicle. When one ovarian follicle matures into a graafian follicle, it prevents the maturation of other follicles by producing a large amount of another hormone estrogen. The estrogen also acts on the uterine wall causing the endometrium to thicken in preparation for a baby. The hormone also causes thinning of cervical mucus in order to allow sperms to pass trough. In the follicular phase, production of estrogen will cause a sudden spike of the LH hormone and the membrane of the graafian follicle becomes more thinner until the follicle bursts to release the oocyte that matures into the ootid which will further on mature into the ovum. The now shell that contained the ovum will change into a yellow mass called the corpus luteum that will start producing progesterone that also causes the thickening of the endometrium in preparation for a blastocyte. The ovum is then released into the fallopian tube by the aid of fimbriae. If there is fertilization and implantation, the formed placenta will take over the corpus luteum and if there is no implantation, then the corpus luteum will wither and the endometrium will shed as menstrual blood in the menstrual phase marking the beginning of the next cycle where the 2 hormones; Luteinizing Hormone and Follicle Stimulating hormone are produced by the anterior pituitary gland due to stimulation of the gonadotropin releasing hormone produced by the hypothalamus.
