In what way are matriarchal and patriarchal societies alike?

In a patriarchal society, the male member or the father is considered as the head of the family. In this, the property is passed on from father to son, that is, the succession is passed on from the father. In comparison, in a matriarchal society, the female member of the mother is considered as the head of the family and is the bread earner.  

In patriarchal societies, the father's kins are considered more important, while in matriarchal societies, the mother's kins are considered more important. In a patriarchal society, the child gets the surname of his father, while in a matriarchal society, the child gets the surname of his mother.  

Thus, in a patriarchal society, the men held at the center position and the most important part of society. While in matriarchal society, it is the female who is at the center position and the most important part of the society.
