The thorax is essentially the chest area of the organism's body. Inside the thoracic cavity, the serous membranes (known as pleurae) are responsible for separating the lungs from the boundary of the thorax. Visceral pleura is present on the external side of the lungs. The parietal pleura is present on the inner side of the thoracic cavity and the diaphragm. In between the 2 pleurae, there is a lining of serous fluid present.
