As a teenager, apprenticed as a wood engraver and was twenty years old when Railroad Alphabet, a children’s picture book, was published in 1865. Breaking with the tradition of earlier children’s books, this illustrator sought to entertain rather than teach or preach to the young. His inspiration came from the flat color and flowing contours of Japanese woodblock prints.
