State powers - According to the U.S. Constitution, all powers not explicitly granted to the Federal government are powers of the states. States regulate many things from criminal policy, to healthcare policy, to education policy, although with great influence from the Federal government.

Federal powers - the most important federal powers are foreign relations and the management of the U.S. military, both led by the U.S. President.

Local powers - local powers are the executed by counties and municipalities, some examples are: fire departments, police departments, parks and recreations, etc.
