Text structure is the way an author organizes their writing. When reading literature, a strong reader needs to be able to identify important parts of a story and determine how those parts add to the story. Authors may use one conversation between characters to develop the theme of a story. Strong readers should be able to identify important events in a story and explain how they contribute to the plot. It is important to be able to explain the effect a sentence, conversation, paragraph, or chapter can have on a story. Read the following text:

Zamila hurried home from school just in time to see her mom grabbing her keys and adjusting her scrubs. Her mom kissed her on the cheek and told her there was dinner in the oven and that she wouldn’t be home until very late. Zamila sighed. It was difficult having a mom who was a trauma surgeon since her work hours were so sporadic. Fortunately, it would only be a few more hours until her dad came home from his job at the university. That gave her plenty of time to do her homework and make her lunch for school the next day. Maybe later she and her dad could watch a movie or work on the greenhouse they’d been constructing in the backyard. She was sure she could find something to keep her busy until then.
