Jellyfish Take Over

By Rosalind Fonem

Lesson 2.06

Instructions

Read through the Information Research Chart that you previously prepared in lesson 2.04. Write a well-developed introduction paragraph of four or more sentences. Remember you are writing about the animal that you began researching in lesson 2.04. My animal is the Jellyfish

Animal Sources: I'm doing Jellyfish

Step 1: Review the steps and parts of a good introduction from the lesson:

Step 2:

Write your hook which will be the first sentence of your introduction. The hook is used to grab your reader’s attention. A quote or anecdote should be used.

Example: For generations, parents have tucked their children into bed saying an old rhyme. “Good night. Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.” They shut off the lights, listening for the giggles of their children imagining cute little bugs tickling them as they try to sleep.

Example: Former President John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

Write your hook here:

Step 3: Introduce your topic. Now that you have hooked your audience, give them 1 or 2 sentences to introduce your topic.

Hook: "The salmon issue is huge, and it is ongoing," states Ken Balcomb of the research center who has been observing whales.

Introduce: Salmon are a major food source for whales. Many scientists are deeply concerned with the number of whales that are being lost each year due to a lack of food, environmental concerns, and human factors. Oceans are being polluted. Boating from recreational and commercial use is affecting these rare animals as well.

Step 4: End with your thesis statement.

THESIS

*states your specific idea about the topic in one sentence.

Write your ONE sentence thesis statement. This you’re your three-part statement that answers the questions:

*can be supported with valid evidence such as facts, expert testimony, and research.

*does not include feelings, opinion, or emotions.

*is written in the (Do not sue 1st person pronouns like “I” or “we” or 2nd person pronouns like “you” or “your”).

What problems does my everyday monster cause?

Who does it affect?

How can it be solved?

These details should be in your chart from 2.04. Do not include details. Save the details for your body paragraphs.

See the examples below.

Write your thesis statement here:

Step 5: Now put it all together. Here is an example to use as a guide.

"The salmon issue is huge, and it is ongoing," states Ken Balcomb of the research center who has been observing whales. Salmon are a major food source for whales. Many scientists are deeply concerned with the number of whales that are being lost each year due to lack of food, environmental concerns, and human factors. Oceans are being polluted. Boating from recreational and commercial use is affecting these rare animals as well.

Review paragraphs 12-15 of the short story, where della goes to get her hair cut at madame sofronie’s. use this “unseen scene” as an inspiration to write your own scene in which you imagine what the two characters might be doing and saying as the haircutting progresses. or you may want to imagine the scene in which jim sells his watch to buy the combs for della.
