आज पृथ्वी का पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र पूरी तरह से गड़बड़ा गया है। इसके बहुत से कारणों में एक हमारी इसे न समझने की प्रवृत्ति रही है। देखिए, अगर पृथ्वी सबकी थी तो ऐसा क्या हुआ कि हमारे बीच से कई प्रजातियाँ, चाहे वो पेड़-पौधे हों या जीव, उनका गायब होना शुरू हो गया ? एक मोटा आंकड़ा बताता है कि दुनिया से वन्यजीवों की 45 फीसदी और पेड़-पौधों की 12 फीसदी प्रजातियाँ घट गई हैं। इसका मतलब यह कि हमारे बीच से बाघ, शेर, हिरन व अन्य अद्भुत वन्य जीवों की संख्या या तो घट रही है या विलुप्त होने की कगार पर है। दूसरी तरफ अगर दुनिया में किसी जीव की संख्या अप्रत्याशित रूप से बढ़ रही है तो या तो वह मनुष्य है या पेड़-पौधों की ऐसी प्रजातियाँ जिन्हें जहरीला कहा जा सकता है। मसलन लैंटाना (कुर्री), वनों में काला बांस तो तालाबों-पोखरों को खत्म करती टायफा की प्रजाति। चाहे खेत हों या वनभूमि, ऐसी प्रजातियाँ ही जगह बना रही हैं जिनका पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र से न कुछ लेना है और न ही उसकी बेहतरी में कोई योगदान है। जीवों में ही देखिए, मनुष्य व बन्दर ही संख्या में अप्रत्याशित रूप से बढ़े हैं, जिनका योगदान पारिस्थितिकी को बेहतर करने में नहीं बल्कि उसको पछाड़ने में ही रहा है।
