Durante el siglo IX se descubrieron los restos del Apóstol Santiago iniciándose así una ruta de peregrinación, la Ruta Jacobea (Santiago en latín se dice Iacobus) que concluía en Santiago de Compostela y que unía todos los territorios europeos con la ciudad gallega. El camino se convirtió en una ruta clave de difusión cultural.
