The city of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala was the capital of the General Captaincy of Guatemala, between 1541 and 1776, the year in which the capital was transferred to the city of Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción after the earthquake in Santa Marta  ruined the city for the third time in the same century.

Although this city is geographically located near at least three volcanoes: Volcán de Fuego, Volcán de Agua and El Acatenango; the volcanic eruptions were not the cause.

The main cause was the continuous earthquakes that destroyed the city, since it was built in a seismic region.
