The cumbia and the vallenato have in common the fact that both are musical rhythms coming from the Colombian coasts, their origins are of the indigenous, African and European (Spanish and German) cultural mix.

The difference between these two musical genres lies in their basic musical instruments.

Vallenato is played with diatonic accordion (German influence), vallenata box (African influence) and guacharaca (indigenous influence); while cumbia is played with a greater variety of musical instruments, such as drums (African origin) and maracas, guache and pitos (cane of millo and bagpipes) of indigenous origin; being the part of European origin the songs of the Spanish poetics.

Another big difference is that the vallenato is on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, while the Colombian cumbia is not.
