Use the imperfect tense to set the scene & to state recurring past events. Use the preterite tense to move the story along & state actions that had a definite beginning & ending. Include words that signal the use of the imperfect (such as "siempre, cada día," etc.) & the preterite (such as "el año pasado, ayer, etc.").
