The preterite tense tends to have verbs end with -aba or -iba. Preterite simply means the past tense. Present tense are usually the tense we use most often. The difference between these two is that you wouldn't use present tensed verbs to describe your past, it would sound wrong.

Durante el verano yo tome un curo de natacin y ahora nado para el equipo de mi escuela. Diverti con muchos amigos de scuela este vacacin lo disfrute tuve un gran tiempo con ellos.
