Why did the effort to identify communists within the united states become divisive?

I believe it's because The role and methods of those conducting investigations were challenged as unconstitutional.
For example, The initial investigation was raised by Joseph McCarthy without any proper proof. Many believed that McCarthy accused only the people who are his political rivals in order to get rid of them from the office.
