Why are the origins of the ganges river described as "holy"?

The River Ganges is also known as the River Ganga which serves as the holiest river in any religion. It’s deemed to be a “holy river” because it is considered as an important deity in the practice of Hinduism. It is respectfully referred to as “Ganga Maiya” (Mother Ganga) by its worshippers.

Hindus believe the myths that surround the river and sanctify it as a goddess. They viewed the goddess Ganga as a beautiful woman wearing a white crown with a water lily and water pot in her hands, and saw her as riding on her pet crocodile. Hindus generally believed that all prayers offered to the river would multiply because of the holiness of the “Ganga Maiya.”
